Android 13, from 2022, is the most used version of the operating system and is present in 22.4% of devices. The data is from October 1, 2023 and was released this Monday (30) by Google on the Android Platform, a tool aimed at developers.
Compared to the previous data, from May 2023, Android 13 grew from 15% to 22.4%, taking the lead about a year after its release.
In the last list, the first place was with Android 11, which fell from 23.1% to 21.6%, coming in second. The third place is Android 10, with 16.1% of the devices.
Interestingly, Android 12 only sits in fourth place, with 15.8% of devices, behind two older versions. Android 14 is not on the list. The data is from October 1st, and the operating system was only released on the 4th.
Looking at the data more broadly, there’s some interesting information. Most devices are running Android 11 or later: that’s 59.8%. When the scope is broadened to Android 9 Pie, from 2018, and newer versions, it’s 86.4%.
Manufacturers promise to update Android
Used in the most different devices of various brands, Android ends up being outdated in some products, due to lack of interest from companies. This problem is a long-standing one — I found this 2010 text from Tecnoblog on the subject, just to give you an example.
The situation seems to be improving thanks to some initiatives by the manufacturers themselves, who don’t seem to want to lose customers for it.
Samsung, for example, promises three to four OS updates for many of its mid-range and high-end smartphones.
Nokia is a little more modest, but sells the mid-range Nokia G60 5G with the promise of two upgrades. Motorola also guarantees two upgrades for high-end handsets, such as the Edge 40.
