WhatsApp now has a new form of authentication: email. The latest version of the iPhone app allows you to register an email address to receive the six-digit login code. This can be useful in situations where SMS doesn’t arrive.
The novelty appeared in version 23.24.70 of WhatsApp for iOS and was noticed by the WABetaInfo website. The app’s changelog doesn’t say anything about the feature, but several people who installed the update say they were able to register the email.
How to register your email on WhatsApp
If you want to know if the option is available to you, make sure your app is up to date. The best way is to open the App Store and see if the “Update” button appears. If yes, tap on it to install the update.
Then, open WhatsApp, go to “Settings” and then “Account”. The “Email Address” option should be in the menu. Enter the desired address and confirm receipt of the message.
Option has been tested since September
The first news about email authentication emerged in September 2023. At the time, the option was still in development, and didn’t even appear to beta users.
At the beginning of November, WhatsApp began rolling out the feature to users enrolled in the Android app’s testing program.
Now, it’s the turn of users of the stable version of the iOS app to have access to this form of authentication. For now, no Android, but since the feature was already being tested, it seems to be only a matter of time before everyone has access to it.
It is worth mentioning that, although you can register an email to log in, it is still necessary to provide a phone number when creating an account.
