Microsoft is close to rolling out the character counter feature in Notepad. The company released the tool in the Windows 11 Insider Preview, the beta program of the operating system. However, the feature is in build 26010 Canary Channel, the Insider Preview channel that is the first to receive news for Windows.
The new tool for Notepad is part of a list of recent Microsoft updates to the text editor. Even committed to increasing subscriptions to Microsoft 365 (formerly Microsoft Office), big tech continues to bring useful resources to Notepad.
Character counter in Notepad
The arrival of the character counter in Notepad was announced by Microsoft itself. The company reported on the news on the official Windows Insider blog. As previously stated, the feature is available on the Canary Channel, which gets a first-hand look at everything Microsoft is testing for Windows.
So don’t expect the character counter to arrive in the next few days. The tools released in the Canary Channel are in the early stages of development. They can have glitches and bugs, causing delays in Microsoft’s release plan.
By the way, Microsoft itself doesn’t recommend subscribing to the Canary Channel if you’re not a developer or don’t have the knowledge — and not even that you install it on a PC used for day-to-day tasks, since problems in the build may require you to reinstall Windows.
The character counter works in Notepad the same as it does in Word. When a portion of the text is selected, the counter will show how many characters are in the snippet. If no selection is made, the total text is shown.
