Disney Vs the New Technologies
As a company famous for its fairy tales and incredible characters like Mickey Mouse, American multinational company Disney is preparing for the great leap forward. Last week Reuters announced that Disney has developed a new division focused on emerging technologies as the company continues to build out its artificial intelligence and extended reality businesses.
Innovation as the sign for a new department
The new executive group will be called the Office of Technology Enablement and will be tasked with exploring, adopting and deploying artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality solutions within the company. Leading this grand enterprise is Jamie Voris, technical director that used to be in Disney’s Studios Technology. Before coming to Disney in 2010, Voris was the technical director for the National Football League. More recently, he spearheaded the creation of the firm’s Apple Vision Pro application.
A new era for Disney
Alan Bergman, co-president of Disney Entertainment, explains in an email shared with Engadget: The advancements are dramatic and constant and will shape consumer experience, creative industries and our company in the years to come. So it is very important for Disney to look at these potential opportunities as well as face challenges that come with them. »
It may be recalled that earlier senior Disney executives vowed not to disband present AI and XR projects in the company in Disney with an Office of Technology Enablement. Instead, it will be about aiding other Disney teams, which include many that are currently developing the products with these technologies, to make sure that their work is in line with Disney’s overarching strategic plans.
A further step in innovation
Disney has been particularly adept at navigating the waves of technological change over the past two decades. For example, the use of the Unreal engine in conjunction with a digital set known as The Volume has made it possible to optimize the production of VFX-heavy shows like The Mandalorian. With AI and extended reality promising major changes in the way humans work and play, it makes sense to add additional oversight to the use of these technologies within the enterprise.
