Our colleagues at Android Authority take a report and three LG patents that point to the release of the first convertible screen smartphones on the market as early as 2021. In detail, three devices are reportedly in the works. The first, known by its code name Project B, is a convertible smartphone concept that is expected to be unveiled in early 2021.

LG: three smartphones from 2021 including at least one convertible model

The idea is to have a device in a form factor similar to today’s smartphones, but from which one can “stretch” a part of the screen that is actually rolled up on a roll hidden in the chassis. In addition to Project B, two other smartphones, including a foldable smartphone, would be planned.

A “horizontal” smartphone with the code name Wing is expected to be launched by the end of the year. Another device, codenamed Rainbow, is expected to be launched in 2021. In recent years, LG’s mobile arm seemed to be having difficulty finding an audience, particularly in some European markets. Such innovations undoubtedly sound like a good way to turn things around.

Android Authority confirms that the brand is already working on prototypes. Surprisingly, their flexible screen would not be manufactured by LG but by the Chinese BOE which supplies manufacturers like Huawei in flexible screens (Mate Xs). LG is one of the leaders in OLED technology, and down screens in general.

We remember in particular this LG Signature OLED R tv with a ripple screen that we discovered at the IFA. It remains to be seen whether this type of device has advantages over foldable smartphones. Especially when it comes to strength, resistance to dust and water. What do you think of the idea of a convertible smartphone? Share your opinion in the comments area of this article!
