CES 2021: here’s the LG Rollable, a new smartphone with a roll-up screen

LG took advantage of CES 2021 to unveil the LG Rollable, a smartphone built around an amazing roll-up screen. The good news is that it’s not just a concept. The unwindable smartphone will be available for sale sometime in 2021.

On Monday, January 11, 2021, CES 2021 opened its doors. At the end of its conference, LG lifted the veil on an amazing smartphone covered with a rollable screen, the LG Rollable. The terminal is very reminiscent of the Oppo X 2021, another phone with a screen that rolls up presented a few months ago, or the prototype of TCL’s roll-up smartphone.

Thanks to this particular form factor, the terminal is able to switch from smartphone to tablet. To enjoy a larger display area, the screen unfolds simply thanks to a mechanism housed in the structure. An engine probably powers this mechanism, which may affect battery life.  A similar system can be found within the LG Signature OLED R, the First Canding Television of the South Korean brand.

LG unveils smartphone that turns into tablet

At first glance, the LG Rollable looks like any other smartphone. But once the screen is fully unfolded, it gets closer to the tablet. Unlike the foldable smartphones currently on the market, including Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2, the LG Rollable is not equipped with a central hinge. De facto, it escapes the trace of folding found on all devices with foldable screen.

At the conference, LG simply teased the LG Rollable with a handful of images. However, the South Korean firm has not yet detailed the technical record of the device. According to information obtained by our colleagues at Cnet from “people familiar with LG’s plans”, the brand will market the LG Rollable in the course of 2021.

The prototype seen at CES 2021 is therefore not far from the final version that will be marketed. Of course, it is possible that LG is content to offer the LG Rollable in a handful of countries at first. We’ll tell you more as soon as possible about the future of the unwindable smartphone.
