Future of valve’s steam controller
The seven-year old Valve Steam Controller that was recalled and ceased production in 2019 could be getting a successor, a recent report suggested. The idea presented in this rumor is that the video game giant is set for immediate mass production for this new product.
According to the new rumors, there will be fresh controllers correlated to the new devices.
This leak comes specifically from a user named Brad Lynch on X and while he has stated that Valve is indeed working on a “Steam Controller 2” under the codename Ibex and a set of so-called “wand” (Roy) controllers are for an as yet unconfirmed VR headset.
Lynch did not elaborate as to what the new controller might interpose. However, he did reply to comments on his original tweet where he stated that the biggest feature on controllers would be ‘trackpads of varying sizes and shapes to get into that gamepad shape’.
This new VR headset being developed?
Lynch also explanation that the “Roy” controllers had more information. These ‘wand’ style of controllers would be meant for the yet speculated ‘Deckard’ VR headset. What this gear would be expected to be like is a wireless headset akin to the Meta Quest. Valve came out with the Wired Index back in 2019 but, to the best of my knowledge, it is no longer being updated.
In order to identify what SteamVR actually is, I was searching for references in the SteamVR code.
Lynch even discovered the existence of the controller in Valve’s SteamVR code. Earlier in the day, Lynch tweeted that the Roy device could have a gamepad filled with buttons, nearly to the brim. Included in this list is the dpad, the bumpers, the triggers, the grip buttons, the ABXY buttons, and a system button – and he says, “some kind of strap”. This implies that the system is a hybrid of a normal controller that one can use when outside VR.
