Xiaomi is removed from the U.S. blacklist

Xiaomi is celebrating a great victory today, since the American justice system has just removed the mark from the U.S. blacklist. As a reminder, the Chinese firm was declared undesirable on January 15 by Donald Trump. A fate very different from that of Huawei, whose case is much more complicated.

It was one of the Trump administration’s last decisions: put Xiaomi on the U.S. blacklist, categorizing the brand as a military enterprise, China’s armed arm. The firm obviously challenged the decision and a Court of Justice in Washington DC has just agreed with it. It is again possible for him to sell products in Uncle Sam’s country and shares to American investors.

Xiaomi of course welcomed the decision in a statement, pointing to the former presidential administration’s relentlessness towards it:

“Xiaomi believes that the decision to place it as a “military society of Communist China” was arbitrary and was the result of a whim, and the judge agrees with this point. Xiaomi intends to continue his fight in court to classify this decision as outlawed and remove it permanently. »

It should be noted that the lifting of sanctions is only temporary and that the US justice system will have to look at this case further in order to give a final decision. However, this is an encouraging first step for Xiaomi.

Xiaomi, a very different case from Huawei

Xiaomi’s case is reminiscent of another: that of Huawei, which has been blacklisted since 2019. In reality, the situation of the two companies is very different. First, Xiaomi only sells products for the consumer market, which is not the case for Huawei, which also manufactures professional products such as 5G antennas.

Similarly, Xiaomi is a publicly traded company and its finances are less nebulous than those of Huawei. As a reminder, Huawei is suspected of links with the Chinese military, and by extension espionage on behalf of Beijing. Xiaomi can therefore breathe, but is not out of the woods, the American justice must decide definitively on his case.
